Mirrors…Reflecting (upon) God’s Grace

I have wondered how to teach my children about God – in the everyday sort of way, the way that I am learning about Him myself.  Not just the next installment of the “God Performs a Miracle” that I used to get in Sunday School when I was a kid.  Let’s face it – I haven’t seen any giants hit with slingshots, nor seas parted to cross on dry land, so those stories, while they portray the LORD’s majesty & sovereignty, didn’t really sink in for me, up until now.

So, I have thought about it, and pondered how do I use the Bible in real life examples.  And wouldn’t you just know that He provided the perfect lessons, not once, but two days in a row!

Friday morning, my daughter was not well, so I stayed home with the Babies.  As they were waking up, they came into my room, and my daughter looked out the window and saw the sunrise and exclaimed “Mom, look at the colors that Jesus painted!”  You know, that is our little bit routine.  I grabbed my Bible and flipped through the concordance real quick, and gathered them beside me, to show them.  It was beautiful.

Psalm 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
       the skies proclaim the work of his hands

I had the opportunity to tell my kids that the wondrous sunrise is a proclamation of God’s work.  Even better – they got it!  It was great.

 Saturday morning, we woke up to a light dusting of snow.  My son looks out the window and is immediately hopping up and down, he is so excited.  He then turns to me and says “Mom, what does God say in the Bible about snow?”

Knock me over with a feather, I was so proud!  My first gut instinct was to use Isaiah 55:10-11:  As the rain and the snow
       come down from heaven,
       and do not return to it
       without watering the earth
       and making it bud and flourish,
       so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,

so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
       It will not return to me empty,
       but will accomplish what I desire
       and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

But, then I thought about where in the Book of Job, how Elihu described God’s power, and I like this more:

Job 37:1-7:

1 “At this my heart pounds
       and leaps from its place.

 2 Listen! Listen to the roar of his voice,
       to the rumbling that comes from his mouth.

 3 He unleashes his lightning beneath the whole heaven
       and sends it to the ends of the earth.

 4 After that comes the sound of his roar;
       he thunders with his majestic voice.
       When his voice resounds,
       he holds nothing back.

 5 God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways;
       he does great things beyond our understanding.

 6 He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’
       and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’

 7 So that all men he has made may know his work,
       he stops every man from his labor.

My kids loved it.  They have learned in Sunday School that God made them, God made everything, and here it is, right in the Bible, that God tells the snow “Fall on the earth.”

Thank You, LORD, for teaching me by allowing me to teach them.

Thank you. And this has stuck, because even now, I can ask “What does God tell the snow?” And they reply “Fall to the earth!”

Great stuff…
